Antic cycle steals for the various modes.  When Antic is fetching data from
memory the 6502 is halted.  The higher the resolution the more bandwidth
Antic uses, the greater the performance hit.  By Resolution I dont mean
map size, If you use a Graphics 0 style screen it causes antic to fetch
character
data too.

You can test this for yourself by coding something like:

10 graphics 3+16
20 for i=1 to 60000
30 next i

And timing how long it takes...If it's too quick for you and your stopwatch
then increase the 60000

Then just change the graphics mode in line 10
10 graphics 8+16

re run the program, and be ready with a stop watch... While this is
very crude it will give you an idea.

> Is there documentation that descibes the cpu hits of various modes?

Recently somebody ran some much better tests on the newsgroup
and actually figured out the equivalent 6502 clock speed, if your lucky they
may see this and repost the details.

Cheers
Pete

It's been my experience that IE is much more tolerant of malformed
HTML. Netscape adheres to the HTML RFC better than IE. IE is designed to
work with the Microsoft web authoring tools (FrontPage). Have you seen the
crap that FrontPage produces? Sometimes it amazes me that any browser can
properly display that stuff.

I think Microsoft did this on purpose. Think about it: Newbie Joe writes
some HTML. Netscape won't display it because maybe he left off the closing
</table> tag. But, IE displays the page because it determined where to end
the table. Joe thinks IE is better because it displayed his page when
Netscape didn't. Which browser is Joe going to use? That's great for
Microsoft, but bad for the web because now there's a group of people out
there that cannot do anything without a graphical tool since they know
nothing about HTML.

First try shutting everything down and pulling all the connections.
Then hook it back up with just the MIO and test it. Often the MIO to
computer connection gets loose or the contacts get dirty. Apparently
it's an electronic "no no" but I've successfully used a soft pencil
eraser to clean the contacts. If you get it working, then try adding the
other stuff one at a time--with mine I often find the SIO plug causes
problems with the MIO and an even bigger culprit is the Real Time 8.
(A dead RT8 battery can cause major problems.)

Maybe you're the only one who understood it correctly. I certainly
hadn't thought of it from that point of view.

If it's the one published in COMPUTE! between 1984 and 1987, then
you can find it at the UMich Archives...
I don't remember if that one was patched (there were some bugs
or typos in the originally published listing, corrected in a
later CAPUTE! column...) In any case, I've got it on my disks...
