OK, but my question was not specific enough.

I meant, if I would want to restore each cassette
unit, each diskette drive et cetera to an authentic
original condition complete with the right type of
cables, I need to know which cable/manufacturer
belongs to which unit type.

Example (right or wrong?): All Atari 1010 tape
units came with 'Chelco' serial cables. All Atari
1010 diskette drive units came with <???>
serial cables. And so on.

Btw, is *the* Chelco that
made Atari serial cables?

I think the answer is "it really doesn't matter"!

AFAIK they simply packed whatever cables they had in stock at the time with
the units, so you'll find some units came with one type of cable and others
with the other type.

It probably also varied between factories.

Here in the UK I've never seen a 1010 packed with a "Chelco" cable....

OK. I still think it would be possible to find out, for
example, that the Tramiels stopped using some
suppliers and started using others. That some
cable manufacturers were used pre-Warner and
some others during the Warner era et cetera.

It may not seem important now, but in the future, I
think many collectors will appreciate authentic
configurations of Atari equipment.

Thanks for reporting your observation! I will add it
to my infamous serial cable investigation... ;)

True, but the point I was making is that I don't think there is a "correct"
cable for XL and XE series machines/peripherals.

Let me just get one thing straight, the "Chelco" cables are the ones with the
manufacturers name moulded into the body of the plug, yes (I ask as I don't
have any of these cables anymore - in fact I only ever had one)?

If so, then AFAIK, these cables were only used once the Tramiels took over
Atari. BICBW.

OK, but don't take that as gospel....just because I've never seen one doesn't
mean they didn't ship the units with "Chelco" serial cables somewhere....

AFAIK = As Far As I Know
BICBW = But I Could Be Wrong
TTFN = TaTa For Now

All pretty standard shorthand. BTW, "TTFN" is what the very first mainframe I
used in the 70's printed when you logged off....aah, all those hours wasted
playing Star Trek on a 110baud teletype link.... ;-)

So that's what that meant! I remember- it was around 6th or 7th grade we had
two teletypes at school and everytime I signed off of them it would respond
with TTFN , nobody ever put 2+2 together and knew what that meant. Those
really were the days....

Took us quite some time to work that out too! Can't remember who actually
figured it out, but it was one of the students rather than one of the teachers
who'd been using the system for years....

  >....Those really were the days....

Quite, there was something really addictive about those text based games.

IMHO most of the fun has gone out of games since they started coming out with
hi-res bitmapped graphics and texture mapping - seems they spend most of their
time getting the graphics right and none on the actual gameplay! :-(

P.S. BTW, IMO the original thread was *not* "OT" -- the question
about cables did directly relate to the packaging of Atari products.
(Translation: BTW = by the way. IMO = in my opinion. OT = off topic.)
