Which Atari ? There are plenty of Atari machines. I suppose there's more
than one Oric too !

I have my Oric sitting on top of my Atari ST with both plugged into the same
monitor. It just needs a switch flipped to  change from one to the other.

You're not a cross-posting troll by any chance are you ?

what exactly is an Oric?  We didn't have them in United States.  I
assume he is comparing it to the 8bit atari
(400,800,1200xl,600xl,800xl,130xe,800xe, XGS basically the same
computer in different packaging).   Alot of people I knew when I was a
kid preferred the Apple II or Commodore 64 to the Atari's and while it
seems each system had its advantages you couldn't convince me then or
now that any of them is better than Atari.

They were going to be sold there but I'm not sure if the distribution deal
was made before Oric went bust.

Oric is a 6502 8-bit computer similar to the Spectrum.

The Oric-1 and Oric Atmos were cheap 6502-based microcomputers
manufactured in the UK starting in 1983.

In terms of ability, they were about equivalent to the ZX
Spectrum, or maybe halfway between the VIC-20 and C64. Expansion
port, printer port, cassette port, eight colours, good sound,
lousy video, 64 kB RAM, BASIC interpreter. No hardware sprites,
no joystick, no RS-232.

They were very popular in France and in the UK (though soon
eclipsed by the Speccy there).

That doesn't sound like a machine that you'd ditch an atari for. Personally
speaking, I own a c64, 800xl and a spectrum and each of them have their good

The original proposition was not meant to be plausible, it was
meant to offend. In other words, it was a troll.

It's certainly not plausible to me, I ditched my Oric for an 800XL!

Cheers,

Simon

One can make an argument for the C64 since it has some bragging rights
over the Atari (and of course the Atari has it's own arguments as
well) but from what I read about the Oric it doesn't seem to measure
up to either system.  That said, like all platforms I'm sure there are
some killer apps on the Oric or some games that are programmed
exceptionally well that push it beyond the specs in it's description.

There is a great deal of importance in the programming - do you remember
some of the early C64 tapes ? I certainly do and can say for sure that you
get better Oric software. Later C64 software is better though making use of
the sprites, colours and sound.

The Atari has better graphics. I've got a 130XE and a 800 XL in the loft but
still use the Orics. For me it's down to ease of use and at the time it had
a lot to do with price. Oric was the first colour computer under £100.  An
Atari 400 only had 16K and was £160 whereas the 800 was £400 and still only
16K ?

Oric tried to market the Atmos against the C64 as under certain conditions
the Oric had more memory available to the user.

The Oric was setup  to be compatible with the 'internet' of the day -
Prestel and BBS systems. Quite a decent machine for the money. A very
different strategy of design to Atari who tried to produce very good game
systems and were market leaders in many ways. Oric was never designed to
compete in that way, but to just be an effective machine that would suit a
number of uses.

Apart from the Oric my favourite is the Atari STe. If you compare that Atari
to an Oric - no contest. Atari wins on every aspect. It even looks good
unlike the ugly lump that was the 400.

dont talk trash about the 400!! Back when the 400 was released in like
79/80 it was the only computer we could afford.  I loved that machine
(still have it in fact) and mine is even uglier than the standard
model with all available upgrades of that era installed (including the
B-KEY keyboard).

Like you say the early C64 games and some of the late 80's Atari 800
games were not programmed well and do not show off the systems
capabilities.  By all rights the Apple IIe was the weakest color
computer (avail in the US) of the 80's but I remember there were games
I saw on that system that made me jealous.
